left: 40px; top: 130px; width: 721px; height: 150px; z-index: 3"> <p class=style2> Instructor Cadet Sergeant Sarah Wilmott 18, of 358 (Welling) Squadron, has recently completed an ATC approved pilot scholarship at Tayside Aviation, Dundee. The scholarship forms part of the Lord Mayor of the City of London's ongoing initiative to involve the ancient livery companies in the cadet organisations; Sarah was sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers (SMC). </p> <p class=style2> Squadron Leader Keith Edmunds RAF (Ret d), Tayside Aviation Project Manager said of Sarah's achievement  She completed her first solo in around 11 hours, a brilliant effort. She is a first class student and a great representative of the ATC. She has been a pleasure to train </p> <p class=style2> Welling Squadron's Commanding officer, Flight Lieutenant Kris Cottier RAFVR(T) is an optometrist and liveryman of the SMC, and it was via this association that the cadet link was formed. The SMC is still heavily dominated by professions dealing with eyes, and is presently the examining body for optical technicians. He says  The SMC has already approved a further pilot scholarship for 2010 and it is hoped that this three way link between the SMC, Tayside Aviation and 358 (Welling) Squadron will continue. For many cadets the pilot scholarship is the pinnacle of their cadet career . </p> <p class=style2> This scholarship is one of only a handful of privately funded ATC approved pilot scholarships, and the third organised by Welling Squadron. Sarah was awarded the ATC pilot scholarship badge. Tayside Aviation heavily subsidised the flying training and without their ongoing support the scholarship would not be able to continue. The reduced flying costs were funded by the SMC. Accommodation costs by the squadron, whilst Kent Wing supplied a travel warrant to Dundee.
