Changes to Probationary Cadet & 1st Class Cadet Training

A new approach to training probationary and 1st Class Cadets comes into force on 1 May 08 and Squadrons are expected to introduce this scheme after this date where practicable and definitely before 1 Jun 08.

A new cadet joining the Squadron will in future be very much part of that Squadron from the outset and be classified as a Junior Cadet to reflect this fact. He/She will be issued with a standardised Induction Booklet (ACP 36) which he or she will be required to complete as part of their induction process; this should only take one parade night to complete. A glossy folder will be produced as an induction package for parents/guardians. This folder will contain the parent’s/guardian’s consent documentation, a brassard/badges leaflet (ACP 37) and any relevant locally produced information such as parade days/times and subscription/Gift Aid details.

The basic training of Junior Cadets will be accomplished within a 4-week period, subject to satisfactory attendance and Squadron Commander’s discretion, following which the Junior Cadet will be enrolled, reclassified as a 2nd Class Cadet and issued with a uniform. The required training for Junior Cadets (known as 1st Class Cadet training, Part 1) has been reduced to reflect the minimum that cadets require to know to fit in with their fellow cadets, and the pass/fail criteria have been changed from checks by examination to checks of understanding, utilising a user-friendly standardised form for ticks/signatures that can be filed to provide a necessary audit trail reflect the minimum that cadets require to know to fit in with their fellow cadets, and the pass/fail criteria have been changed from checks by examination to checks of understanding, utilising a user-friendly standardised form for ticks/signatures that can be filed to provide a necessary audit trail.

The remainder of the training undertaken by a 2nd Class Cadet (known as 1st Class Cadet training, Part 2) draws upon the above check of understanding approach and makes use of a similar user-friendly form for audit purposes. Indeed, the reasoning sought in implementing these changes is one of practical demonstration by instructors within and around Squadron premises, rather than desk-bound instruction. Upon completion of this training, the cadet will be reclassified as a 1st Class Cadet. The whole process from first attending the Squadron to achieving 1st Class Cadet should take no longer than 6 months to complete.
